European Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2009
Juan Tébar Carrera
Juan Tébar was born in Cádiz, Spain, in 1966. His photographic career started early with an intense focus on landscape photography. He often photographed the marshland in the bay of Cádiz, an area that is still dear to him. Later he started travelling to countries like Ireland, Scotland and Norway and in Kenia.
The results of his work have been published in numerous books (“Las Aves de la Bahía de Cádiz”, “Sierra de Grazalema: Agua, Fuego, Tierra y Aire”, “Los Alcornocales Parque Natural”, “Guadalquivir el Río de la Vida”, “Andalucía Viaje al Asombro”, “Vía Verde de la Sierra: Paisajes para el Recuerdo”, “Sierra de Cádiz: Tierra de la Luz”).
Juan Tébar loves a photographic challenge. He regards them a chance to prove his photographic skills and to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of nature in his pictures. His motto: “A good picture is born in the photographer’s mind long before he presses the shutter.” Planning great pictures in advance is an important part of his work. He aims at the perfect photograph, one that moves people, the essence of an experience in nature.

"The picture has been take in the Alcornocales National Park, in the South of Spain, very close to my hometown El Bosque. I had observed that Griffon vultures were regularly visiting a small group of hills. Out of curiosity I went up there and found the carcass of a goat that had perished on the spot. I set up my equipment inside the carcass – and the vultures took care of the rest."
